Engine & Transmission:

The engine is an inboard Perkins 4108 diesel. This model engine was commonly used in leisure craft, as it is very reliable and long-lived. It is fully re-buildable, as a kit can be purchased for doing this.
Since acquiring Hal in 2009 I have always had the engine regularly serviced. It had a top-end strip-down and check in 2012 and the fuel injectors renovated by Lancing Marine in 2014. The engine runs perfectly.

The gearbox is a TMP 12000 hydraulic gearbox. It was removed from the boat in 2012 and fully rebuilt by Thamesway Marine Products (its manufacturer). TMP is still operating from its workshops in Weybridge.

The original propeller turned with the boat's forward motion while she was sailing and the sound of the prop shaft turning, although soft, annoyed me. So it was replaced in 2012 with a feathering propeller, which folds flat when not in use. Quiet sailing now!
